The End of Summer – Part 1

The weekend I wait all year for- Labor Day. Jean was lucky enough to score some tickets to Rock the Bells on Governor’s Island for Saturday. The line to get onto the ferry was so ridiculously long, luckily Jean’s friends were pretty far toward the front of the line and we got to slide in with them. We met this middle-aged white woman who was in line in front of us. Seems she was just trying to get over to Governor’s Island to meet up with her daughter and son-in-law and had no idea there was a hip hop concert going on. (They’d diverted the ferry traffic for the concert to the Staten Island terminal, while general public could just use the regular GI Ferry, and this lady got caught up in the wrong line and had to wait for like 2 hours in line with a bunch of young black kids. Proving once again that separate ferries can never be equal).

When we finally got over to the island, we saw performances by Gza, Cypress Hill, Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill and also to enjoyed a cup of rose alongside a veggie corndog- proving that there certainly are not enough fake meats on sticks at these types of events.

The next day, because i hadn’t had enough wine and soy protein, we took advantage of one of those groupon-type deals and tried out Bark, a glorified hot-dog shack in Brooklyn Bridge park- not over by DUMBO, but further down closer to Borough Hall and that new condo they keep advertising on TV. While they have a few volleyball courts nearby, and a decent view of Manhattan, I wasn’t so impressed with my soy dog and coleslaw, but Bark seems to be doing pretty well- perhaps it’s a captive audience of hungry volleyball players.
